I'll be in Panama for a week this spring (PC and Bocas). Can anyone recommend a place to buy molas and baskets? Also, what is the price range for these items?

In Panama, go to the Artesian Market by Panama Viejo, there is a wide selection of vendors, competition is good, and there's lots of room for negotiation. Prices depend on size, complexity, and quality of the molas. They can be as cheap as $1-2, and as much as $200...

Of course, the best place is the San Blas Islands but I found a good selection on the Plaza by the French Embassy in Casco Viejo as well as in Portobello.

I thought that there was a good selection of baskets at the artisans market behind the YMCA in Balboa. There's also a Kuna market a few blocks from there that is almost all molas.

I found the best selection and prices for molas right in PC at Flory Salzman Molas. This lady has been buying them from the Kuna for the last fifty years and has an extemely large inventory ranging from $5 on up. They were also very helpful with selection, quality, were willing to bargain, and had good discounts for quantity. Have fun. Mike
