In April I am flying to Mexico and will be travelling south eventually getting into Sao Paulo for a flight out in November. I want to travel through as many countries as possible and this includes Panama and Colombia.

Obviously crossing between the two I run into the problem that is the Darien gap. I want to travel in Panama as far as Panama City and then from there get into Colombia. I’m really not interested in traveling in Darien itself. Ideally I’d like to jump aboard a boat and get round that way but I don’t know how regular people set off and where the best place to go from is (I don’t want to go from Colón if I don’t have to). It would also be useful to know how long something like this is going to take me to plan once I’m on the ground.

Has anyone got any recent information about going between the two? From doing a bit of research online it’s seems most stuff is pretty outdated.

Check threads on sailing Panama and Colombia and you'll find lots. There is a popular hostel in Panama city that can facilitate this. It's called the Mallamena hostel and they have a web site.

Mamallenapa@yahoo.com Phone 507 6676 6163. Be sure to ask the Captain of any sailboat you are thinking about sailing to Columbia if they will stop in the San Blas for some snorkeling. Also have some cash on the trip to buy a few Mola's from the Kuna.

No sorry I don't, but check the yacht club (Panama City & Colon) internet or at the Mallamena Hostel.

just took a boat this week. do NOT cross the Darien. the situation has NOT changed, nor will it. the militaries do NOT have the capability to confront the terrorists there, with their sophisticated, high tech equipment. boat was wonderful, for the most part. Casa Viena in Panama City set us up with a great crew. meet the captain & get a feel for his personality, credibility, etc. if you get a bad feeling, DON'T go with him. Luna's Castle also has some leads. from Cartagena, try talking to Hostal San Blas. you should pay under $400. anything more than that is just stupid. heat was oppressive, however. have good sunscreen. don't count on a shower. they often use bottles of fresh water to hose down. food is usually included. you stop at San Blas for a day or 2. wonderful snorkeling. 2 days open sea. one day at Sapzurro. anyone with motion sickness, DO NOT TAKE THIS TRIP. we do not get it, & we were feeling queasy. feel free to ask me more.
