I've seen this discussed a few times, but I'm still struggling on coming up with a solid itinerary on spending about 3 weeks to travel from Panama City to San Jose. A little background, I'm 23/m and most likely I'll be traveling solo. I know this is way early but I'm looking to travel ~Dec 10-31st of this year. I've done 2 months backpacking in Europe but since that was mostly hitting major cities, easy trains, and more populated areas, it seemed easier to plan. I'm planning on just staying in hostels but money isn't too much of an issue. I also don't really want to get too far off the beaten trail, especially if I'm alone. This is something I've basically stolen from a travel site, not really sure what I should add/subtract for days and what i can do with the extra. I also am not looking to rush, days hanging at the beach and not doing too much are welcome as much as zip lining through the jungle.

Day 1-3 Panama City
Day 4-6 Santa Catalina
Day 7-8 Boquete
Day 9-11 Bocas del Toro
Day 12-14 Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Day 15-17 San Jose
Day 18-21?

This was a little lengthy, but any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Depends on your interest, but you can kill the last 3 days in CR doing a load of adventures, but 2 days In Pt Viejo? I suggest 3-5 nights there. lots to do, add rafting Rio Pacuare and hitting Tortiguero Canals with a night or two in Playa Cahuita and you have a vacation.

You also have the La Amistad park, which can be accessed from Panama or CR, and the indigenous indian villages.

There is no reason to spend anytime in San Jose, period.

Other options would be the Arenal area for adventure, hot springs and volcanoes fix.

I agree but if you are spending five nts there why do you need to spend time in Cahuita? Instead of spending 7 nts in the vicinity Why not do 3 or 4 and a few at Tamarindo? I do prefer the Carribean since I've spent almost everyday of my life on the Pacific, but its worth a glimpse.

Playa Cahuita has a nice music/nightlife scene that is more afro caribe in feel, spicier food/cafe offerings, a nice park to hike, and the Sloth Sanctuary nearby...

I'd reduce my city days to the bare minimum, eliminate Boquete and use the extra days to extend my stay in Bocas and the Talamanca/Cahuita area - OR, if you're into sailing, you might consider hopping aboard the Andiamo (www.theandiamo.com) for a 2 night cruise about Kuna Yala.

I would eliminate Boquete and consider Boca Brava or similar beach area around David. At 23 I think Boquete would get boring pretty soon. Or spend those extra days in Santa Catalina, BDT, or PV.

Because of the time your going everywhere will be packed except for the cities. You really should hit a mountain town in panama like cerro punt or Santa fe. Boquete is nice but it will be very crowded. If the weather is nice in bocas when you are there you may get trapped. Christmas time is magical there.

Thanks a lot everyone, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I'm going to research these ideas and change my plan accordingly.

I wouldn't delete Boquete as I thought that was great if you were looking for hikes and outdoorsy stuff.

Personally, I thought Puerto Viejo was like a lamer version of Bocas del Toro- same cost but everything felt over touristy. I would cut down my time there.

Also, I would cut down or delete my time in San Jose and Panama City (though I hate huge cities). There really is not much to see there.

Actually PV is twice as much as BDT, pretty much everything in CR is twice as much as Panama, except for hotels.
