Hi and thanks in advance. I need to visit Panama for a few days from Costa Rica in the next week or so and am looking for a cheap place to stay (under $30 preferably). I've been to Bocas & stayed at Las Brisas, which was okay (once I moved from a really smelly room), at least the price was right, and if I can't find something else I'll likely do that again, though I don't need to go to Bocas, if there's anything closer to the border that's inexpensive, clean and safe that would be fine. cheerio

There are plenty of places to stay on the mainland of Bocas but there is nothing really for visitors so the hotels and restaurants/bars will be very very local. You can stay in Indian villages at a very basic setting. It just depends on what you want to do. If you want to spend 3 days in a tiny town with nothing happening, that is very possible. Although Las Brisas is on the water there are seemingly much better options in Bocas Town. There seems to be quite a few tourists in town right now (a lot of families)but it is still low season which means low season prices.

Thanks, Maliante, I wound up finding Tesoro Escondido, very reasonable at $35 and am staying a week instead of 3 or 4 days. I love it here!!! Quiet, way out of town, nice little beach, lots of wildlife, good people, pretty good food plus a common kitchen, a big rambling place full of creative details and character, great hosts. I'll be staying here again on future visa runs.
