We are planning a trip in June to Panama. We hear it rains in June, though maybe only half an hour a day. Does the rain in June make hiking trails muddy and other eco-tourism unpleasant? If it is muddy, are normal hiking shoes still sufficient?

Kinda depends on where you will be. We are located on Pacific side (www.VillaSanchezBarry.com) , an hour or so west of PC. At our location, June rains may last an hour or slightly less. It tends to rain about 0.5 inch, and then only every other day. There are usually 3 to 4 days with over 1.0 inch, but they are the exception and not the rule. Our more frequent and heavier rains come in August, Sepember, October and November. Monthly totals for June (at our site) tended to be around 5.0 +/- inches during the past 4 years ('07 = 9.9"; '06 = 5.35"; '05 = 6.5"; '04 = 4.25"). So you see, June is not too hateful when it comes to precip. Trails may be "wet", but not so muddy as to be a problem. Incidentally, if you are hiking in thick rainforest it is entirely likely that you will never get wet during a 1/2 inch rain (due to canopy).
