Hi,

We will be spending 3 weeks in panama, from mid-September to the beginning of October.
Here is what we had in mind:

Day 1 - PC (arriving at night)
Day 2 - PC (canal, caseco viejo)
Day 3-6 - contadora island
Day 7-8 - Chitr'e. The plan is to spend 2 days in town an use it as a base for visiting Festival Nacional de la Mejorana in guarare
Day 9-13 - Boqute
Day 14-16 - Bocas
Day 17 - Back to PC
Day 18-20 - San blas
Day 21 - Back to PC

So, this is where i'd love to hear some advice:

  1. Is contadora worth a visit? on one hand, I hear that the pacific side is much nicer than the caribbean during the wet season. on the other hand, I hear stories about contadora being in a bad shape, with some beaches filled with hotel ruins, etc.
  2. How's the weather in bocas & san blas during the end of September/ early october?
  3. Would you recommend going to santa fe or santa catalina instead of going to contadora?
  4. Has anybody been to Festival Nacional de la Mejorana? is it worth the trip?

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice.
I'll use your suggestion and decide based on the weather conditions.
I do have a lot of island time on my itinerary (:, so I wonder, would you skip one of the islands I mentioned?

Hi Itayl,

You don't have to worry about hurricanes in Panama... even in the Caribbean. If nicoleeslal would have done some research before creating false alarms she would have found out that Panama is outside of the hurricane belt.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_belt
There is a really cool graph on the page above which shows all of the hurricanes plotted since 1851... Panama is safe =)

In regards to the weather in Panama's Caribbean, September and October make some of the driest months. Waters are flat and clear, perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling.... In fact, in the middle of September, La Feria del Mar takes place in Bocas, thanks to the great weather. My wife's uncle is from the UK and will be visiting us (I live in Bocas) during September precisely because of the nice weather... you can learn more about the weather in Bocas del Toro here:

I really appreciate your advice, thanks a lot....
as for chitre and the fiesta, it seems that if we are going to make it, we'll make it on a weekend (:
but I'm starting to get a feeling that if I'd like to really enjoy my trip, with no rush, I'll have to give up one or two places...

Hello, itayl18
on the island of Contadora. There's an abandoned hotel (Contadora Resort) and adjacent to a beach with 5-6 good beaches. Especially since the vast island. Take a boat - just a skipper - and you ride on the top ten islands within a day or two days. They are the best beaches I've seen in Panama, the most desolate. I suggest there is still catching fish with a rented boat. I personally caught a fish on 10 kg of weight, Corvina. I do it the same evening in the restaurant at Punta Galeon prepared. Made three dishes etloy fish in three adult visitors. They took all of 10 dollars per person, and we got cebiche, sashimi, steaks. Simply delicious. I advise you to rent a golf cart with Contadora's maps and travel around all the beaches and bars. There are places with free Wi-Fi.

Boo.

No hurricans in panama. the best time in panama is between december and april. excellent weather and no rain. in october it will rain and san blas is better than bocas del torro because so many rivers in bocas that the water gets brown. In san blas are also rivers but the water is cristal clear also in the rainy saison. I would recommend an boat in bocas and also in san blas because if its rainy you can do other excersice on board but to stay only on islands in small huts on the hard floor. think about it.

boats trips in san blas costs only around 150,- US/person all inclusiv

at the moment the boats safady, coolrunning, gypsy moth and santana offers trips only in san blas.

I'm sorry to say but there is inaccurate information in the two previous posts.

The weather in Panama's Caribbean is quite different to the weather in the Pacific, and the good weather December - April rule does not apply to the Caribbean. Inf fact, December is the wettest month in the Caribbean.

Grab any guidebook or do your research and you'll find out that September and October present some of the best weather for Bocas del Toro with very little rain and flat waters, specially the second part of September and the entire month of October.

Here's some weather data for Bocas from 1970 - 2000:
