Sounds like the trail has really eroded in the last few years. The power of nature!!

Thanks everyone,
It sounds like the weather has been rough on Sendero Los Quetzales. As an alternative, what recommendations are there for great day hikes to see the wildlife and the scenery - ? Volcan Baru or La Amistad parks instead? We are not really interested in hiking to the top of Volcan Baru. We are not planning to rent a car so access to the trails is important.
We are trying to decide what we want to do so we can decide where to stay for a few days - David, Boquete or Cerro Punta.

I've been in Boquete/David/Volcan/Cerro Punto since 1st of Feb. There are plenty of good hiking opportunitites out of Boquete. I stayed at Pension Marilos and hooked up with other hikers to see 3 waterfalls one day just outside entrance to Sendero Quetzal. We were told the trail is closed due to yet more rains in the area this month. There are hikes to giant (banyan?) trees, birding hikes from Il Pianista, and great walks along the Rio Caldera. You will not lack opportunities to see the area and a guide is only necessary if you would like to hike across the Continental Divide or be assured of good birding. Happy trails! p.s. If you venture out to Lost and Found on the road to Bocas del Toro, there is a great opportunity here for even more primitive lodging and hiking.

We;ve also been in Boquete for a month. 3 nice trails we've done so far are the "Pipa de Aqua" trail (goes along old waterpipe - ending in beautiful old forest - quite magnificent). Pretty easy walking. Easily accessible from the Bajo Mono loop just outside Boquete. Near there is also another called "La Culebra" trail. If you don't have 4 x 4 drive up Bajo Mono toward Alto Queril? park on side of road and DO not go down gravel road to trail (we did in our\ non 4x4 and found it difficult to get back up. Trail crosses river via footbridge on left down hill. Supposedly you could walk this trail to Bocas (in about 3 days). 3rd we did was Il Pianista. Park by Il Pianista Restaurant up on hill beyond Boquete. Trail goes through several fields from side of restaurant. Eventually turns up into some really nice forest. This trail goes all the way to Continental Divide supposedly.
Great hiking on the Cerro Punta side too of course, maybe even a more beautiful area. We've enjoyed the area around Los Quetzales lodge and also Las Nubes in Amistad.
Yesterday we came across a couple who had hiked from Boquete to Cerro Punta (we were just exploring the end of the Cerro Punta side).. Apparently now the trail is open- but doesn't sound like it should be. They were obviously experienced young hikers and they found it quite difficult - mudslides - difficult in places to follow, etc.
