Hi Guys,

Have just signed up to see if anyone could help me....I am trying to book flights from here in the UK, to Panama and then to New Zealand. Its turning into a bit of a nightmare as i keep getting told its an unusual route...has anyone on here headed to NZ via Central America...? I've been warned its gonna be pretty expensive!! I was considering just a one way flight to Panama and then buying a flight from there to NZ. Will this be cheaper and will they let me in if i say i wanna buy a flight from there?

Also, any info on Panama would be really appreciated too...have travelled some of South America and fell in love so before headin to NZ for a year i would love to explore some of Central America and Panama looks right up my street...off the beaten track and fairly quiet (not many tourists)??

Thank you very much if anyone has any advice. :)

From the UK to Panama you can go with Iberia (changing planes in Madrid), with KLM (changing planes in Amsterdam) and with some airlines of the USA (changing planes in their hubs in the USA).

From Panama to New Zealand, the main option is to make it changing planes in the West coast of the USA (most likely Los Angeles).

You can take a look at fares of tickets from London to Panama to Auckland in webs like Kayak or Expedia (use the multi-city; multiple destinations feature).

Do you plan to return to the UK or are you only looking for a one-way ticket? If you plan to return to the UK, Do you plan to return straight to the UK or do you plan to visit other country (or city) en route?

A couple years ago I flew from Auckland to Guatemala but was routed through Miami, no idea why but it was the morons at Qantas that routed it, so they don't likely know either.

Possibly your best bet would be to buy tickets from UK - NZ via US e.g L.A (esp if you are retuning within the year to UK) then buy seperate flights down to Panama from L.A (you might want to look at other countries in CA as well) and back up via an airline like TACA or search via expedia or similar). Central America is extremely expensive to fly to when combined with NZ. I recently flew NZ (Wellington) - Sydney - LA - El Salvador - San Pedro Sula (Honduras) then return San Pedro Sula - El Salvador - San Fran - Sydney - NZ (Wellington) the flights from US to Central America were with Taca the rest was with United Airlines for the long haul (bloody awful airline) & then Air New Zealand between NZ & Aus as they partnered with United. If you are wanting to go to Auckland (or dont care where in NZ then you would most likely get a direct flight from the US To Auckland which knocks out a tedious layover + extra flying time of course. My flights total I think were around $2200 NZ bought through STA so included all the associated fees & taxes so you may be able to save even more through online booking.

I thought you could fly from Peru or Chile to New Zealand? Or is that via Somoa/Fiji/Guam or something? It is a crazy route but a damn good one...

Sure one can fly from Auckland to Santiago de Chile, Qantas tries to tell you you can't, but they lie!

Yes, you can fly from Chile to Auckland with LAN. There aren't direct flights out of Peru though. It was possible to fly from Buenos Aires to Auckland with Aerolíneas Argentinas but they ended their flights to Auckland some months ago.
However, in order to get to Central America, it's usually cheaper to go through the USA.
