We are traveling to Panama in April for 10 days. I would like to rent a car at the airport or in Panama City
and drive towards David. I know David has a lot of the same rental agencies that Panama City has. Does anyone know if you can drop off a car in a different location without too much of an extra charge?
Any suggestions for a not too expensive($20-$40) place to stay that is on that route and is away from the beaten path? Thanks. Jenifer

This is a copy of an answer I posted to another person 2 weeks ago. The last paragraph answers your question.
Suggestions:
I highly recommend that you book your rental car online, instead of walking in off the street. My guests seem to get the best deals that way.
Also, review your home owners policy and auto insurance policy from home, it is possible that you might have some coverage there.
Consider the credit card that you are using to book, they might have some other insurance protection. By saving on the insurance, you can save close to 50% on the actual rental.
If possible, use a credit card that has a low credit limit, this way if something unfortunate does happen and they freeze your card, you will only be charged up to the limit on the card.
Finally, keep in mind that the car rental companies will charge upwards of $150.00 additional if you are going to drop off the car in an office that is anywhere but the original one where you rented the car.
Hope this helps!

Half way between Panama and David is the charming little mountain town of Santa Fe de Veraguas. From Santiago, you take the turn-off towards San Francisco and Santa Fe.
Hostal La Qhia is a good value (27,50$/night for a couple) and a beautiful spot!!
You might want to make a reservation, it is pretty busy... The hostal is mentioned in the Moon guide.
