Hi all!
In a week we are going to start our 2 months journey around in Central America and one of the places we would want to visit is Darien. We are on low budget and therefore Darien is a problematic place for us, but I was thinking to try and get on a local boat, maybe at Yaviza, to get deeper in, and then to hire a local guide in one of the villages at the river and maybe also stay for some days or maybe a week (waiting for a boat) in one for a while, if that is possible. I have some Spanish knowledge so that if the person I'm speaking with have a bit of patience I can communicate on basic level. And we are comfortable with roughing it up. The question is still, how realistic does it sound? What would it cost for 2 people, I read in Moon guidebook it might be 10 USD only or so? And, very good question, what time it might take to catch a boat in and then a boat out? Several days, a week, several weeks, a month, several months? We aren't much in a hurry, but it would be good to also get back before our plane home has left ;)
Another question, possibly a hilarious one, is, do you think it is completely idiotic to camp in Darien with hammocks (and we have a mosquito net), not in a tent? We have been in jungle in Thailand, and that felt safe and alright, but it might be different in Darien... hungry big cats, my travelling partner suggests ;D
All the inputs, Darien-wise, would be much appreciated!
