Hi All,

I will be visiting Ometepe Island mid April. As I have been reading in my guide book and online, transportation on the island is not easy and could be time consuming. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to stay on the island that you found had easy access to transportation around the island? I am looking for accommodation below $25, preferably a dorm room under $20.

Also, is it advisable to rent a motorbike instead of taking public transportation? How much would that cost a day?

I plan to spend 4 -5 nights here and want to hike one or both of the volcanos, bike, and swim.

Thank you in advance for the suggestions.

Moyogalpa : Hotel Aly, big double room with private bathroom, $20. The room was okay but had hoped to pay a bit less. First night was a bit noisy (bats ! under the roof, not in the room). Rooms without private bathroom were a bit cheaper. We climbed Concepcion from there (great experience but hard !).

Charco Verde : Posada Chico Largo, we took the cheapest double room (with private bathroom), $15, very basic but right on the lake ! We did the nature trail and swam.

Balgue : Asi Es Mi Tierra : very nice hotel with beautiful courtyard, garden, path to beach and friendly owners, double room with shared bathroom was $12, double room with private bathroom was $17. We climbed Maderas from there (recommended if you like the cloud forest) and we took the bus to El Ojo de Agua. We also tried to take a bus to San Ramon to hike to the waterfall but we had to hitchhike to get there and were lucky to get a ride.

You can travel quite easily by bus to Charco Verde, Altagracia, Ojo de Agua and Balgue (the road to Balgue is now paved) but the road to San Ramon and Merida was not paved yet and there were few buses going there. On Sunday there are hardly any buses but hitchhhiking worked for us.

I think renting a motorcycle was $25 a day. We met some guys on motorcycles while trying to hitchhike to San Ramon, one of them had a hard time as that road was really bad ! But a lot of roads are paved now.

Enjoy !

El Zopilote in Balgue. I can't speak for the accommodations, but I did frequent their pizza nights (they use a local cheese that tastes like feta). Seemed like a very chill, sociable place. Met people from all over. Bring a flashlight.

Alexis Bikes is next door for bike rentals. Alexis is also an excellent guide for the volcanoes.

Buses are punctual running dawn to dusk, but few and far between. Not really an inconvenience. Just ask when the next bus passes through and plan your time accordingly.

I live on Ometepe Island, so here are my recommendations

Take the ferry to Moyogalpa. Stay at Yogi's Hostel ($8 dorm rooms). Eat the weekend grilled chicken at Dona Chilo's..cheap and delicious. Hike Concepcion from your home base in Moyogalpa. You can also rent a motorcycle ($25) at Robinson's Rentals in Moyogalpa or take a bus.

Then, you can catch a bus in Moyogalpa to Balgue (about an hour on a paved road) Little Morgan's is a fun party place to stay. You can hike Maderas from this area and visit Ojo de Agua..a really awesome natural spring with clear, cool water. The road to Merida is horrible. It's not paved yet and very slow going. So, you probably want to avoid the Merida area until the road is paved, especially in April when it is hot, hot, hot, and very dusty. Hope this helps.

Is Finca Magdalena still an option? I stayed there a number of years ago; what a lovely view.

Happy travels, Iza. Ometepe is my favorite place in Nicaragua. I'd love to make it back there, drink rum on the verandah at Finca Magdalena and soak up that million dollar view.
