Please help! I leave in two days. My friend has lent me her Garvin Nuvi 260 for an upcoming trip to Nicaragua. She said that she had paid extra for a lifetime update on her maps. This is supposed to be covered worldwide. She did an update last night. But once I get to the country is there anything else I need to do? Does it automatically register as being in Nicaragua or do I need to do something in the settings? Thanks!

It is a GPS. It knows where it is. I didn't use a Garmin but my Samsung Galaxy S3 was able to find my location at Pt Sandino using the Google Maps app.

Why do you need a Navi device in Nicaragua? The main routes are simple to follow, and no need to rent a car IMO, but if you do, I hope you know about shakedowns, bribes, and rules of the road, and dont drive at night, and stay out of Managua.

The main roads are not bad, but are poorly marked. So if you don't already know the route a GPS would be useful. I didn't encounter any shakedowns when I was there.

Lifetime maps doesn't have to cover Nicaragua. They probably haven't built a new road there since all the Russian bulldozers finally gave up the ghost.

Actually there has been a lot of road building in the past few years, and a lot of improvements in existing roads. I visited in January and it was night and day vs. 3 years ago.
