Hi, we are heading to Nicaragua/Costa Rica for 3 weeks in April. Our kids are 6, 5 and 3 and we plan on the following itinerary:
Flying from Managua to Corn Islands, staying 2-3 nights there, then taking the boat/bus back to Managua. Thereafter heading to Granada and down the coast to Costa Rica. I wonder if anyone has travelled this route with small kids and can give us recommendations? Anything from child friendly activities to hotels, warnings about too long bus or boat trips etc. Is Little Corn a good place for kids or is Big Corn better?

thanks

Nicaragua is a good country to travel with kids. I have never been to Corn Islands but I would never travel by boat/bus back from there to Managua. We always made bus trips from about two to three hours (by microbus or regular), stayed a few days and continued to an other place. A nice place to stay with children is absolutely Isla Ometepe Charco Verde or Finca Playa Venecia. There is a near Nature Reserve where you can see Howler Monkeys and the beach is good for children in that age. Visist the Water Hole Ojo de Agua with natural fresh water swimming pools.
I spent several times in Las Peñitas at Hotel Barca de Oro just in front of the Laguna, where children can swim. When you stay in Granada do a day or overnight trip to Laguna de Apoyo, fresh clear water and the kids will love the kajaks.
I have never been to upscale hotels in Nicaragua and I don’t know if they propose children activities, never needed it. I don’t supose that there are special children friendly things in Nicaragua, but in all Nicaragua children are welcome and you have to find your way. I supose it is not the first time you travel with your kids and you know what you expect. I love Nicaragua, enjoy it.

you're going back to Managua from Corn by boat boat bus with young kids?
I wouldn't recommend that!

I agree, its hard enough on a adult. Not to mention the heat! Thats ONE LONG DAY.

OK - point taken! Thanks, if you all agree on that the boat/bus trip is too tiresome, we will skip that and take the return flight back. Our kids are very used to travelling but there are limits to what they will take. That will give us more time as well, so we can follow the recommendations of jacquisuiza - thanks alot!! Upscale hotels are not needed, just places where we can hang out and do kidfriendly things and still experience the country.
