Hey Guys,

I leave Bangkok on Friday heading for Managua, I only booked my ticket on a whim today and am really excited but also a little apprehensive about traveling in an unfamiliar city as a solo female; does anyone have any experience here or advice, all is welcome!
I would really like to book a night or two accommodation in Managua for my arrival as i get in at 8pm, am on a tight budget but want to feel safe...know anywhere?

Also, if anyone is in the area, i think i'll be heading to Granada, San Juan del Sur and hopefully up to Leon if possible, at least that's my thought at the moment...if you'd like some company then drop me a line!

Appreciate your time and inspiration, safe travels to you all!

Lucy

Yes, I traveled as a solo female in Nica... take usual precautions. And will also cast a vote for Managua Backpackers Inn----stayed the night I arrived and my last night before an early flight --cheap, clean, nice area.

Not sure I'd want to hang out in Managua for long, head to Granada, there is so much to see and do-- Masaya and Mombacho Volcanos, kayak the isletas, visit Pueblos Blancos, shop at Masaya, visit Laguna de Apoyo.

If you stick to the 'bar/ restaurant' areas like Zona Hippos and Galeria in Managua you won't have any problems.
get your hotel to get your taxi.

Never heard anything good said about Managua. But Granada is nice. Great old buildings, cheap Spanish lessons, relatively safe, good food, cheap good accommodation, and a very pleasant zocalo.

I would NEVER say Managua is safe. Be CAREFUL! Taxi at night, and day time for that matter, even your camera will make you a target, no comparison to Bangkok, which far safer for a tourist, male or female.

Get out of Managua.

Nicaragua on the whole is great, Leon can be dodgy at night, but what city is not?

Have fun.

BTW- How are you getting there? BKK>Tokyo>Mexico City or LA then MGA? How much?

Well I live in Managua and as I've said on this forum many times its nowhere near as dangerous as some people -who normally have'nt seen the city outside of a hostel and the bus station- make out, but if you're here visiting 24 hours is enough, it's not Buenos Aires!
Camera around your neck is OBVIOUSLY not advisable!!
I don't know of any capitol city in the world where that's a good idea!
I personally know more people that have been mugged in Leon than Managua!
San Juan del Sur is certainly more dangerous- mainly from trouble with gringos- than areas in Managua like Zona Rosa and Galeria.
IMO better to go to more 'loca'l beaches like Masachapa, Las Penitas, Gigante etc.
Benefit of 24 hours in Managua is no tourists and a chance to meet Nicaraguans who aren't part of the tourism industry!!

I know of plenty capitols where you can have a camera around your neck, walk at night, and no worries overall. Just walking around any Capitol in CA is a risk, at night, NO WAY!

I had no problems in Managua, I didn't much care for it but it does deserve a chance. Nica is a great place to travel as a solo female. You will meet a tonne of travelers to travel with. SJDS is over-rated in my book. Granada, Ometepe, Rio San Juan, Estili, Somoto, Leon, Apoyo, Masaya, Corn Islands all great. Have fun.
