Ronnie and his "Freedom Fighters" were THE WORST thing that happened for Central America since the Conquest!!! The unnecessary loss of life was abominable, and there are nations and regions still recovering!

Back on subject, it depends what you want. Granada is tourist oriented but still a nice place to go and a good base for day trips to many places including San Juan del Sur, Momabacho, Lake Apoyo, Masaya. There is also a few good activities in Granada itself. San Juan del Sur is the tourist spot on the Pacific and there are a lot of beaches going north and south from there, most with lodging options. Ometepe is a nice island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua and is a favorite of travelers. Lots of seismic activity right now and it is a volcanic island so I would keep that in mind, In the north you have to cool mountains, Matagalpa, Jinotege, Estelli and Selva Negro, a resort on a coffee plantation with hiking trails and wildlife. The is the northern city of Leon which is less touristy then Granada and has nice beach towns about 15 minutes away. There is the San Juan River for wildlife and Jungle exploration. Las but certainly not least are the Corn Islands, Beautiful undeveloped Caribbean gems. It's all what your looking for and how much time you have.
