I am looking for a way to travel from the US to Nicaragua by ship. I would prefer leaving from the West Coast, but am open. Does anyone know how to do this?
Back in 1855, Cornelius Vanderbuilt planned a canal route through Nicaragua. Gold seekers wanted an easier way to get to California instead of crossing the country by wagon train. They left NYC by boat and sailed to Greytown, Nicaragua where they boarded a small paddle boat that took them up the Rio San Juan to Lake Cocibolca. They crossed the lake and landed in La Virgin. Then, they rode mules to San Juan Del Sur where they caught another boat up the coast to San Francisco.
Wouldn't it be fun to reenact this trip?
Maybe you can take a cruise to Nicaragua from San Francisco? I know a cruise ship leaves Miami, goes through the Panama Canal and up the coast stopping in Costa Rica, San Juan del Sur,Nicaragua and ending in Mexico.
