Just returned from a medical mission to Nicaragua. It was a lot of work but a great trip. I can't believe how the country has improved! The roads are much cleaner and free from garbage. And Managua has many "new" shuttles replacing the old school buses.

Was wondering if I could bring a desktop computer into the country. I would bring it in the original box and packaging. Is this something that I can check as baggage at the airport? Would I have to pay money at the airport in Managua to "import" this item? Or would the customs people just confiscate it?

Thanks in advance.

I am sure you will be fine with just one, if you wanted to import 2 it would be different, well I have never had problems bringing in a laptop which is, after all, a more expensive desktop

Profetisa -
I can't answer your questions but I did have some with regards to the medical mission you were on. I tried PM but they don't seem to be working. Do you mind if I ask a question regarding this, either here or via PM?

Sorry to derail the thread a bit.

Normal customs rules apply which you will have to satisfy by way of questions if you are stopped. Electrical goods must be for personal use to avoid paying duty and strictly not for resale- not many tourists carry a desktop around with them!. If you have resident or work status then this would help the explanation. If you were obviously trading computers then they may seize them, but with just one they would probably write it in your passport giving you the option to pay duty or take it back out with you.

a friend who used to cover central america for AP during the conflicts smuggled a desktop to mexico city. he removed it from the original packaging and repackaged it.
