I'm traveling with a family of 5. I'm wondering if it is just easier to rent a car. I'm planning on going to Granada, Ometepe, and beach area like SJDS. Haven't been to Nicaragua before so I don't know if it's hard to get around, if it is safe, and whether my options are limited with 5 people.

I have rented cars several times. If you rent one from the airport and head toward Granada, you don't have to drive through the main city of Managua which is good. I took my rental over to Ometepe on the ferry but I'm not sure your really supposed to do that. I also had to wait an extra day as there was no room on the ferry for the car when I arrived. This may prove to be a problem for you. Hiring taxis is cheap but with 5 people you would be pushed in pretty tight. They are usually fairly small cars.

Public transport is cheap, safe and easy...no problems at all getting between those places.

All of your trip is short distance, go with a taxi or private driver, easy to find someone with a minivan that will fit 5 and luggage, bargain but not too hard.

You don't want to mess with the ferry and/or a rental on Ometepe. Hire another dude once on the island.

Make it easy on yourself.

Thanks! Is it hard to find a Minivan for each segment and how much should it be?

Airport to Granada
Granada to Ometepe Ferry
Ometepe Ferry to Rancho Santana

Check with the lodging you have in Granada for the costs of a shuttle or taxi service, make sure they know it's 5 people and luggage.
Once on the ground you'll be able to find better deals, I'm sure you can find someone at the airport with a van but it would be easier and less stress just to arrange a pickup from your motel in Granada.

When you arrive in a new place start asking around for the next leg of the trip, ask at the taxi stand, shuttle services, your motel etc., don't be in a hurry and keep asking, you'll get a good idea pretty quick what's reasonable, it's very easy and affordable in Nicaragua.

Also ask if they know of anyone where your heading, like Ometepe, don't be surprised if they have a relative/friend who would be more than happy to be an escort.

Just ask around while you checking out the new town you are in, you can have a lot of fun with it actually, every one is very nice and will want to help you out, be your guide or driver, especially with kids.

Taxi hire is cheap overall and easiest IMO. Lot cheaper than a rental car, driving in Nicaragua is not the best, shakedowns and bribes are commonly reported...getting lost is easy too. Roads not well marked.

Hotels/Lodging usually have taxi drivers they prefer for their guest...

Enjoy...Granada is HOT!
