Hi Travelers !

I was thinking of combining two activities during my trip to Nica:
- learning Spanish
- and practicing surfing.

Can you recommend some nice place, preferably around Leon (Las Penitas ? Jiquilillo ? other ?) where I could stay for 5 to 7 days, attend Spanish classes or take private lessons and also have access to decent surf (I am far from being an expert so no need for world-class breaks) .

I will greatly appreciate any recommendations on Spanish school / tutors and laid-back, non SJDS-type of places on Pacific coast

Cheers !

Hello,
when do you want to visit Nicaragua? In the moment is raining season...

In Las Penitas, close to León are a few different surfschools also with board rental. You can walk around and speak with the guys.

Unfortunately many of the "spanish-teachers" or "spanish-schools" are not very professional or motivated.
They don't have even real books about grammar etc.

i know only one school which works actually on a high education level.

Look for this one:

I hope I could help you.

Hi Josecito,

I will be in Nica in the period of 8-25 of October. Hopefully the rainy season should be leaning towards end that time.... Is it that bad at the moment ?

Thank you very much for the hint on language school in. Do you think it is possible to stay in Leon and combine lessons with trips outside of town (some trekking for example, trip to the ocean coast), or this will be to ambitious ?
Thanks !

Thanks !

Been twice in Nicaragua in october and is was bad, heavy showers, a flooded river in Matagalpa and a region near Chinandega flooded as well. But you can be lucky....If you like hiking as well the Matagalparegion will cater to your needs, try www.matagalpatours.com ,travel and spanish lessons in a less touristy, more local, atmosphere

Hello,
nobody knows how the weather will be...

Normally it is dryer around Leon than in other parts of the country.

Last year we had only 1 time rain after 25/october. But every year is different.
In the moment we have more rain than in august, but also not every day, mostly in the night or late afternoon.

From Leon you can do hiking to different volcanoes, for 1 or 2 days. That's not very complicated. Normally you can do this on weekends and you have classes monday to friday. Or you skip one day classes and you go to your adventure. Or you visit a volcano in the morning and you will have classes in the afternoon... when it's maybe raining.

From Leon you can take a bus to the beach if you want. It takes 30 minutes... So it's a good place to stay and have many things to do...

Someone has recommended me one spot at the Pacific Ocean - simple cabin situated close to good surf brakes at Isla de Aserradores. Has anyone visited this place ?http://www.surftheboom.com/index.html

I was also informed that around Jiquilillo are nice quiet beaches.

But is it possible to find a surfshops/ board rentals in those more remote places ?

If you are a novice, you dont want a good surf break, they are too big of waves, you need a calm roller type wave, it will be weeks or months before you are able to surf the "good breaks"...

Oct in Costa Rica/region is a mess as well, and I would avoid it this time of year, run off from the rivers pollute the coastline and the beaches, so unless you dont mind muddy waters and yucky debris strewn beaches and waters, have low expectations for a nice waters and beaches...

Learning to surf, is best with an instructor the first few mornings or high tides, then its all practice, also, never go on the ocean alone, always surf with a friend, the board can easily injure you or worse knock you out, as well as there rocks usually on the pacific coast, so know what the beach looks like at low tide.

Keep in mind that many of these smaller beach venues in Nica are near nothing, no nightlife or towns to hang out in, and that time of year, it could be just you...

I just spoke with a friend of mine who lives in Las Penitas. He told me that surfing in Jiquilillo isn't that good.
Maybe better to do it in Las Penitas. And of course in Leon is much more nightlife than in Jiquilillo.

I live in Jiquilillo. This rainy season has been really dry this year. Guests have been visiting from all over the country and have been complaining about heavy rains and luckily for us, it's been great beach weather! Knock on wood, it's been great here! Surf is up and beach is empty. Take advantage of Rancho Esperanza's low season specials on surf rentals $7 a day, dorm rooms from $5.50 and cabins at $18. www.rancho-esperanza.com for more info

Some benefits of Jiquilillo surf: no rocks, few currents and much safer than Las Penitas/Poneloya which can be dangerous for beginner surfers due to strong rip tides and rocks. Jiquilillo may not be as consistent to Leon's beaches, however, you will not have the crowds, will always surf a beach break that always provides left and right breaks, and for the beginners, you have no rocks to worry about.
