Im thinking of going to Esteli for some courses of Spanish. First of all, could you recommend Esteli? If so, could you recommend a school there?
If not, which place in Nicaragua would you recommend to do a Spanish course?

Esteli is a great place to study Spanish because it is off the gringo trail and you will have plenty of opportunities to practice. I think there's a school called Horizontes there, but you should get the MOON book for sure.

I hate to discourage people from any one place, but I would personally not reccommend Esteli. Solely because I was robbed there, and not only that but had met two other people also robbed there, near the center of the town. It was a fine place to visit, i guess mine was just tainted by being robbed there.
Please give more details to your robbery mostly what kind of weapon was used to persuade you from parting with what possessions? How many people were involved?

There will be crime anywhere, I would take the poster's caution in mind in terms of your conduct, but Esteli is no more or less dangerous than other cities in Nicaragua, and certainly safer than Managua. Lots of medical mission trips, etc opt for Esteli, I´ve heard nothing but great things about the city (I myself have only spent 24 hrs there 9 yrs ago) and for learning spanish it is definitely a good idea to be off the gringo trail. Don't go to SJDS or Granada for that, and even Leon is now quite full of foreigners (though I suppose "full" is a subjective term). Another option if there are any good spanish schools there is Masaya. It is a nice small city, close to Granada, Managua, beaches, etc.
