Hey,

I've heard about people doing 2-3 canoe trips down Rio San Juan (from San Carlos or elsewhere). Camping and staying at the river side communities.
Haven't been able to find a lot about this online or rates.

Anyone have information or has done this before?

Cheers.

There is a report in the FAQ.

You can do this from el Castillo. Took a two person canoe out on two separate days in 2007. Fantastic experience. The best part was definitely going down some random tributary. Great wildlife, including crocodile. But most memorable is the little Miskito villages that you go past. Went up to the point where we hit some rapids and water was too shallow anyway.

Everyone who has advertised rates wants a lot of money for the trip. You can go to San Carlos or El Castillo and just tell some locals you are looking for a guide. The word will get around, since everyone there knows everyone else, and you will find a good guide. I went in February all the way to San Juan Del Norte and my guide was Eduin Espinosa from El Castillo. Nice guy, and he has a store and a Hospedaje also. I am going again this year in December or January.

You can camp on the river? I had not heard that. Does anyone know if Immigration in San Carlos would be able to allow a foreigner with a North American plated motorcycle exit Nicaragua to Los Chiles via a cargo boat and get the paperwork both leaving Nica and entering CR?

You can do this yourself for a few bucks - no need for a guide. Head upriver for half an hour from el Castillo and there's a random tributary on your right. Go down that until it gets too shallow
