Naugastyle, definitely the family that runs Hotel America were very, very sweet. I arrived late at night, got a room by the entrance that had three twin beds, I think all they had left. Was just sort of... scary...as in not clean... maybe I am thinking of someplace else? But it was on the corner right across from the really great bakery.
Sorry to hear about the truck coming by La Cabana! The biggest issue I had was the local kid who repeatedly climbed into the window and the waitress had to keep chasing him out!!

No, I'm sure you're thinking of the right place because a name like Hotel America is hard to forget, and also because I am pretty certain there was a 3-bed room by the entrance. It's totally possible my standards are low when it comes to cleanliness...I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
Yeah, that nice open window in La Cabana unfortunately makes diners sitting ducks for beggars. What's the deal with the truck anyway, did you see it when you were there? Some people I trekked with had seen it but no one was sure what it was... the "steam" that came out of it definitely smelled a bit like bug spray.
For anyone wondering about the bakeries, I checked my photos and there is one right on the corner across from Hotel America called Panaderia El Leoncito and one two doors down (walking east) called Panaderia Munguia. Munguia is the one with a crowd every day, although I imagine Leoncito is fine too!

Oh man, maybe it's just me being a prima dona!!
I didn't see the truck when I was at La Cabana...I probably would have thrown that warning into the recommendation...
I think it drives around town spraying, it's not just at La Cabana. It's a mystery... our Queztaltrekkers guides, one who had lived there 3 weeks and one who had lived there 2 months, had somehow never seen it and didn't know what it was, but several of the trekkers who were out that night saw it...
