We just arrived in Nicaragua, and have noticed something confusing to do with passports. I'm Australian, and the tourist card I was given at the border says I have 30 days in the country. However, the stamp in my passport says I have 90 days. Has anyone noticed this before? Has anybody had any troubles overstaying a tourist card in Nicaragua?

Hello,
Just returned home/the Netherlands after 4,5 months in Nicaragua. I didn t get a touristcard at the border, just got a stamp with 90 days written in it. I overstayed my visa a couple of days, payed a few dollars per day because of this at "migracion" in Managua, and extended my visa also here, which can be done one time for 3 months. Going to Costa Rica for 3 days (or return the same day if you are lucky they do this, or bribe them) gives you 90 days again. You cannot do this in Honduras...
Have fun, Hans..

You go by the stamp in the passport. The card also says you have to give it back when you leave. I am there once a month. I could wallpaper with the non returned tourist cards. You do need to fill out an embarkation/debarkation card - the same one you fill out on arrival - if you are lucky the airline gives you a two part carbonless version, if not then ask for two - the information is the same on both.

When you leave nobody checks you , e.g .no passport control but migration does pickup the debarkation card. Of course any arrival date could be on it.

There is a fine of 20 pesos a day or you can extend as pointed out, or leave and return after 72 hours. (out of the CA-4 area that is).
