Hi,

I have a month, starting off in Managua, and it seems like there is not so much to do in Nicaragua, so thought of going north either through Honduras and into El Salvador, or just doing Honduras. For some reason My general focus is colonial towns, beaches (white sand) arts, not terribly into ruins, as I have been to many. Having said the latter, if there are some spectacular ones, I'm in. I hear safety concerns more in Honduras than ES, but for both much more so than Nicaraugua. I travel alone, am 61, speak quite a bit of Spanish. Also have thought of staying somewhere for a week and doing a Spanish intensive. . Just looking for some feedback/suggestions. Thanks, folks.

I saw that one too. Moving on, it is my opinion that there is no significant difference in safety in various central america. if anything i might go defcon 3 in costa pura vida rica. I advice not to let that be a facitor in your incision. for beaches there are enough in nicaragua, as in corn islands and san juan sur.

Not much in Nicaragua ? You can easily spend a month there. Colonial cities : Leon (lots of churches, museums, murals...) and Granada. Volcanoes. Beaches. Ometepe Island. Rio San Juan with Los Guatuzos and El Castillo + Indio Maiz. The Northern Highlands (Jinotega, Matagalpa, Esteli). The Corn Islands. Do you like nature at all ? Hiking, volcanoes, wildlife ?

If you do go to Honduras don't miss Copan. The ruins are great and the town is quaint. There are also hot springs and the macaw mountain bird park.

Granada and Leon are beautiful colonial towns, close to Leon there are white , not that, sandy beaches at Las Penitas.....from there you can travel north to El Salvador, Copan in Honduras and hey...Antigua/Guatamala..?

With one month stick to Nica, more than enough to do and see, the people are fantastic, you'll love it. Save the other countries for another trip.

On the Pacific coast of Central America you won't find white sand beaches. The sand is more grey or beige colored, but the surf is great. So, white sand, you need the Corn Islands or the Honduras Bay islands.

Nicaragua has killer colonial cities, and is the best place to study Spanish, either in Leon or in Granada, or some people choose Masaya. If you want Spanish classes, you'll have a much harder time finding those in Honduras or ES, because the number of tourists in those countries is way smaller.
