Hello! Thanks to everyone for your highly detailed accounts of traveling in Nicaragua. We are absolutely sold and are now planning the specifics.

My question: Is November 6-21 a good time for us? December 18- January 2 is easier for getting time off, but I worry that time frame will compromise our hopes/priorities for the trip.

Our hopes/priorities:
Get there quickly/easily/cheaply from the US.
Cheap internal transportation preferred once we get our bearings.
Decent weather.
No (or few) reservations in advance, except for first and last nights. We want to follow our whims.
Travel light and cheap with occasional splurges.
Lots of outdoor activities.
Some quality beach time.
As much immersion in the "local feel" as possible.

Thank you!!!

If you wan to wing it and do the trip cheaper, go in November, I've found traveling at that time in CA to be excellent, to few people, easy just to show up and get a place and you can bargain for lodging.
I have not been during the x-mas holidays but have to guess it's the same as Easter, which is fun but incredibly crowded, the locals go all out during that time, all of Latin America is travelling during that time.

It probably doesn't matter which timeframe you choose. November would be slightly calmer. Christmas is not nearly as big a travel holiday as Easter, but still for the beach it would be best to reserve in advance that week.

Thank you both, this is very helpful. I'm definitely leaning towards November, even though Christmas does sound pretty fun. If I change my mind we'll definitely reserve in the hot spots. Hermosajoe I'm glad to hear you've traveled in the area during November. Part of my concern was weather, but from what I'm reading I think it should be good enough.
