I plan to cross into Nicaragua from Costa Rica at Los Chiles/San Carlos. I will have dollars in cash and my ATM card. Advice please on changing dollars and or atm use to get enough cordobas for a weeks worth of travel to El Castillo and then on to Managua. Thanks!

I'd probably just get about ten dollars' worth of Cordobas at the border. Enough to get further inside the country, where you're likely to get a better rate. I think you're likely to find plenty of guys standing on streetcorners just about anywhere in Nicaragua with fists full of money to exchange.

There are definitely money changers outside the ferry terminal where you arrive in San Carlos. They will no doubt approach you as soon as you leave the immigration building.

As I recall, there's an ATM in one of the pavilions on the refurbished waterfront area, near the ferry terminal.

There definitely is an ATM in San Carlos, down by the lake

While it's true MOST places accept dollars and will give you a fair exchange rate, you may find that area of the country to be an exception. I have not been down there for a while but I could not get anybody to accept dollars in El Castillo. I finally was able to get a friend of a friend to exchange enough for me to pay for my ride back to San Carlos but he wasn't really happy about it.

I was there a couple of months ago. There are ATM machines at the banks, and by the dock, lots of them. no problem.
