I have just downloaded the new Nicaragua lonely planet for my trip next week and am reading that one of the busiest times in Granada is during the mid August fiestas? I'm not finding much information about it online, but am wondering how crowded it gets in terms of accommodation. My original plan was to arrive in Granada on the 15th, but if I can avoid crowds by going elsewhere for a few days first, then I will. One site mentioned Hipica parades on the 17th and 18th? Another mentioned bull fighting. Does anyone know if the 17th and 18th are the big days? In general I prefer the non festival atmosphere of city, but as long as I won't run into accommodation issues I don't mind. I really don't like to book ahead, but will if I have to. Thanks.

ok then... i'm going to assume from lack of response that these festivals are not that big and I shouldn't worry about accommodation. good :)

In Guatemala and thinking of heading down next week too. So I'm interested also as per above in the current accommodation situation in Granada.
Anyone?
Thanks
David

Ok for future reference for anyone traveling through during these festivals.....it was indeed very busy. I arrived yesterday and was told that it was the busiest day of the year. Parades of people on their horses and makeshift clubs (some sort of scaffolding platforms) on many corners. It was entertaining and all but I'm glad I only caught the one day. Things are back to normal now.
