I was planning to go Managua on Tuesday for a business trip, but my friend emailed me and asked me to cancel my flight since there are many clashes and conflicts among the two political parties because of the elections. many shops are closed, etc. and the situation is not normal. can anybody who is in Nicaragua especially Managua now, tell me how is the situation?

Hi Globetroter.

What's been going on lately in Managua has been directly related to specific events and anouncements. Things seem to have calmed down for the time being, so I wouldn't let it change your plans. I was in Managua Friday and decided to head home for Leon earlier than planned as there was a crowd gathering to celebrate the FSLN ''victory'', but primarily because I didn't want to get stranded there for the night due to congestion and full buses. You'll be fine.

Considering the FSLN (Sandanistas) have officially 'won' the mayoralty in Managua as of last Thursday night, and the Friday celebration went off without any skirmishes, I'd say you're in the clear!

Gingsam is right - most issues were in specific areas, namely Metro Centro and the part of Carretera Masaya that is nearby.

I checked out the celebration Friday night, as the Managua Backpackers Inn is just around the corner, and it was just a lot of happy people in red and black. What you have to get used to is the sound of the homemade mortars, which are shot off both in protest and celebration, so it's good to ascertain which way the crowd is leaning in that moment ha.

Thanks alot for all your helpful information, though I had already cancelled my flight which was for yesterday, I am going to take one for next week. it will be my third time in Nicaragua, last time I was there in 2002 for 2 months. I don't know wether the country has changed alot since my last time in 2002?
