Hello,

My wife and I are going to Little Corn Island for a week in mid June (rainy season I know, but that's the only time we can do it.) We're going for the diving and I also want to fish for bonefish around the island there.

I've heard the diving is fair to good. Has anyone had any luck with bonefish there?

Also, we're debating staying either at Derek's or at Casa Iguana and are will to pay about 50-60 bucks a night. We'll probably rent a kayak for a couple of days, fish from shore most days and dive a couple of times. I have seen mixed reviews for Casa Iguana, but I read that they have affordable kayaking and great fishing right from the beach and that would be convenient. Dereks looked appealing because of its "South Pacific" look, but I know it's a long walk to it. What would you recommend we do?

Thanks so much for your help!

frumpsa - Please keep us posted! I'm a diver and my husband is an avid bonefisherman. We travel to CA every summer (we're both teachers) and would love to hear about your experiences on Little Corn. It's been on our radar for awhile but we keep heading back to the places we already know and love. Happy trails!

We loved Little Corn and were very happy at Casa Iguana.
We had one of the bungalows on the cliff overlooking the reef. It was soo private we felt no need to dress to sit out on our deck. No RV, no hot water in outside shower but an inside toilet.
Breakfast was included and dinner was served to all guests as a group so we met lots of people and made some good friends there.
The places along the beach were less expensive (Casa Iguana was $50) and people staying there were happy with them.
We had first reserved at Dolphines but did not like it as the rooms were concrete and could have been anywhere (with TV and AC).
I did not see any one fly fishing for bonefish but there is a fly fishing guide business there.
Diving was relatively shallow 40-50 ft but fairly good with lots of nurse sharks and eagle rays. We went out with the dive boats and snorkelled with our own gear for just $5 per trip and the water was clear enough that we could see everything the divers saw just with a free dive.
We never took the walk to Dereks but believe that from that side of the island you could swim out to some of the better dive/snorkel sites.
It is a place we would return to which is the highest praise I guess.

I just want to mention to contact Derek's early. I've been looking for nights there and they haven't contacted me in two weeks. Perhaps it's because they're booked, but it would be nice to know. However, it's also sort of nice to know the island isn't easy to contact via the rest of the world.

Good luck with your trip!

Thanks to all for the advice. I'm not sure that I made up my mind entirely, but I do appreciate all of the tips that will make our stay better. I will let you all know how it works out in June. Thanks again.

I would like hear someone relate their experiences about diving off of Blowing Rock.

We stayed at Casa Iguana, food, drinks great, I think the price was too high for the accomodations. If we went again we would stay somewhere else but defintely stop and eat and drink there

Casa Iguana is overpriced, I agree, for what you get, BUT I still recommend it heartily. It has a brilliant location on the windy side of the island (important, trust me... and I like hot weather), the cabanas are basic but cosy enough, and it has the best bar on the island. The restaurant is also good, with home-cooked meals every night, as well as a good breakfast. The grounds are nice, and it's close to a nice beach. It's major advantage over Derek's is that it is only a 15min leisurely walk into town - a walk that you'll be doing daily if you're going to go diving (I highly recommend the dive shop Dive Little Corn, which is also linked to Casa Iguana). Oh, and Casa Iguana takes credit cards, which Derek's doesn't - this is useful if you forget to take enough cash with you, as we did! Having said that, Derek's is undeniably better value ($35 versus $65, although you have to share a bathroom), and the cabanas looked really nice too. It is a good 20 minute walk into town, so you'd be stuck there for dinner every night as it gets very dark on the island from about 6 o'clock. I don't know what the food is like... It's by a great beach though.
Oh, and when you go, make sure you check out the Cuban restaurant on the town-side. It's excellent.
