I am planning to go to Nicaragua for 9 days in May and I was wondering if it's possible (immigration wise) to cross the border into Costa Rica and go back the same day.

Anyone have any ideas?

No problem at all, although its worth pointing out that Liberia is really a service hub and not very interesting. All that "white city" stuff is somewhat overstated although a few of the original buildings do remain.

Agree, no need to leave lovely Nicaragua for Liberia, total waste of time IMO.

The border crossing at Peñas Blancas is an international disgrace. You would probably spend 2 hours of the day dealing with that bureaucracy.

ColdWeather, what do you base this on?

I crossed on foot, and took me 20 minutes,,,,

I have done the border crossing many times & can only say it varies.

Once I did both ways in just under an hour (exit Nic, enter CR, exit CR, enter Nic)
My worst time ever it took 6 1/4 hours one way (exit CR, enter Nic).

On average, on a normal day, I would say to count on an hour each way.

While I like, Liberia, I agree it is not really worth a day trip unless you a special reason to go there.

We would cross the border every 90 days into Liberia. We never had any problems and it took us about 20 minutes, one way. Actually, I always looked forward to going into Liberia. It is a lovely little city with some good restaurants. We always did our big grocery shopping in Liberia because we lived on Ometepe Island. The beaches are very close, too. We would rent a car in Liberia and travel along the coast. Plus, we always flew in and out of Liberia. The airport is small and easy to get around and since it caters to tourists, the flights were always cheaper.

Gypsytoes, does Nature Air still fly the Granada>Liberia route?

No. Too bad but, I guess it just wasn't economical.
