hey, anyone have any favorite trails in nicaragua, preferably one that doesn't require the use of a guide? i'll be there from march 6-17 and would like to spend three or four days hiking. any thoughts or comments?

Near Matagalpa is a lodge called Selva Negra. They have some pretty nice trails with lots of wildlife. Most people just hike around the lake by the lodge. Hardly anyone on the longer tougher trails.

Hello Ahron,
Selva Negra is oke. But , near Matagalpa are some more exiting trails. Contact "Matagalpa tours" or next doors "green tours" who can guide you to more exiting places.
Have fun Hans

hike maderas, the volcano on Ometepe island. It's not the easiest hike but it is amazing. you do need a guide! so don't try to do it yourself. people have gotten lost and died. I've hiked it twice and both times my guide was awesome. Also I hiked volcano telica, which is right out side of leon. you also should take a guide but its worth it. Once you make it to the crater you get to look inside an active volcano. probably one of the most amazing things i've ever done.
