Are there any buses (expess) that go from Granada to Rivas? So far my research indicates that there are not. If that is indeed the case, how much would it be to hire a (reliable) taxi driver?

There are several busses that leave Granada for Rivas. One leaves at 7.30 or so and in 90 minutes you will be in Rivas. Tica Bus you only need to go to Costa Rica or so. Have a look to Moon or Lonely Planet, you will find the time tables for these busses for sure.

Buses to Rivas from Granada leave every hour or so from a terminal just south of the main market. From the Esfinge Hostel, walk a block south and turn left at the crossroad by the petrol station. the terminal is on that block on your left. takes about 1 hour and 30 to 2 hours. Costs just over a dollar.

Ticabus can´t get you in Granada and drop you off in Rivas unless, of course, you pay full fare to Costa Rica, and even so, law in Nicaragua prohibits international bus lines to transport passengers within domestic destinations.
Regular buses leave often, but they stop every other second, there are no express buses from Granada to Rivas. There are shuttles, on the other hand. They are more expensive, but worth to use. I´ve used Paxeos - www.paxeos.com. its office in Central Park. No hassle, no overcrowds, no animals in the vehicle, YES A/C, and the best of all: room for your legs.
