Planning on Granada, Ometepe (all meals w/ be provided for, so doesnt apply here), and Leon. How much $(USD) per day do you think we should plan to spend on food? We'll prob bring a bunch of granola bars to snack on, so thinking of two meals per day, and drinks, or course.

Thanks!

You must be out of your mind! How could this possibly be a concern? What could make a difference between spending 5 dollars or 8 dollars per day for food? If your budget is this tight I would suggest that you get a job and then pretty soon you might be able to move out of your parents' basement!

@2368: geez! Why would you be such as ass to a complete stanger you know nothing about? Clearly if it's $8 / day I have nothing to worry about. And, btw, I have a very good job (what do YOU do?), and happen to like granola bars. I think I'm done w/ thorn tree if it's filled with jerks like you.

My husband and I just got back from Nicaragua and we visited Granada, Playa Madera, Leon and Esteli. We always seemed to find very nice places to stay that were between $5.00 and $10.00 US per person. Some of these were hostels but generally we tried to find small Nicaraguan establishments for hotels and also food. (therefore Kathy's Waffle House was not on the list!) Breakfast of gallo pinto, eggs and toast (rarely tortillas) was $2.00pp. We also skipped lunch. Dinners were $4.00 to $5.00 for a large plate of fresh grilled fish and rice or chicken and rice. There was of course lots of variety...I am just giving you an example. Lots of Nico suggestions for same price. Beer ranged from $.65 to $1.00 per bottle. Large bottles of water ( I think 1 and a half litres ) .......$.75. Buses of course were cheap everywhere. We estimated that you could probably live on $10.00-15.00 per day. Beautiful country. Have fun.

We are right now in Granada and I'm a bit surprised reading about 5-8 dollars a day for food.
The brekfasts cost 3-4 dollars, dinner, usually, 10 dollars pp. The cheapest fish and chips in Granafa is about 120 cordobas and the portion is not huge. Add drinks tips = you easilly get 10 dollars per person for a dinner.
The beer is 17-25 cordobas for 0,33 or about 35-40 for 1 litre.
Cocktails 20-50 cordobas. Sangria is good here, costs about 50, but happy hour are quite often.

If you work at it you'd be able to survive on $5/day for food - you'd be eating a lot of rice and beans and will have to spend some time searching out less expensive locations.

We found the food prices very reasonable breakfasts $3-$4 for some eggs with rice and beans. Dinners were between $5-$10 - not including alchohal - you can eat really well on $15/day.

We also brought some trail mix and granola bars - not sure why 2368 was so rude.

Again, we did not eat in places that were listed in guide books. They will always be more expensive. We didn't spend much time looking for places but........we did eat a lot of rice and beans. This is after all, Nicaragua. The food was always well prepared and delicious. Easy to find. My husband and I were not on a budget as were other younger backpackers that we met. We just prefer simple places to eat. Many 20 year olds were buying more street food and making their own dinners from market food thus making a more affordable trip. Many were on extended 6 month trips and were living economically to make their cash go farther. Fair enough.
