Hi,

Granada the first night and then, the next day, head south to get to ometepe? That seemed liked the best idea, just wasnt sure if we could/should go further south and be closer to ometepe.
Thanks for the advice!

i cant in good conscience advise any more traveling at night than necessary. more risk of robbery after sundown.
Yes, Taxi to Granada and Ometepe in a day or two. There is a fun chicken bus from the market in Granada to Rivas. It is good for a few laughs, and is a little over an hour I think. Price is right. From Rivas just take a taxi to the ferry.
A taxi to Granada will be $40 with the airport taxis. They will try for more so you will have to bargain.
From Granada the bus to Rivas takes 1.5 hours and will be just over $1. It can be crowded but we like it for the hustle and bustle, vendors...
From Rivas take a taxi to San Jorge ($1-2 per person, they will try for more as well). Ferry/boat to Ometepe.
If you want to avoid the $40 for a taxi to Granada you can stay overnight in Managua. Nicaragua Guesthouse ($28 for a double) and La Casa de los Abuelos ($40 for a double) are close to mercado Roberto Huembes (walking distance for La Casa de los Abuelos) where you can take a bus to Rivas ($2) in the morning. A taxi to either hotel with the airport taxis at night should not be more than $15 ($10 would be better) but they will start much higher.

Try to team up with another person or 2 from your flight to help split the cost of the taxi to Granada while in the airport, not out on the curb. Should be pretty easy to get s a few.
I think we paid $35 to Granada right from the airport. At that time of the night it would be good to have reservations waiting for you in Granada. I would highly advise the taxi to Granada over staying in Managua for several reasons that I can think of right now. Managua is in the opposite direction from the road to Granada by about 20 minutes when leaving the airport. You don't really want to get into Managua at night, especially if you are tired. Sure, you will most likely be safe with a taxi to a hotel by why bother when for a few dollars more you can be in a better place when you wake up as well as closer to your destination. It is a little over an hour ride from the airport to Granada.
Head to Granada for the night. It will be close to 10pm after the Immigration/Customs and most places to eat will be closed...
It is not advised to travel at night overall in these parts, CA is not just a random crime issues, but the roads are not marked well, and people, children and farm animals share the road with the traffic, and there are no shoulders.
Would you really want to take a small boat on a windy lake at night in the second poorest country in the hemisphere? Not to mention the views on the boat in daylight from San Jorge of the Isla Ometepe with two huge volcanoes looming in the distance, is one you don't want to miss...
Enjoy Ometepe...
