Hello - with less than 2 weeks to go, I am super excited and now thinking about what to take. If you have climbed Maderas on Ometepe, could you let me know if 3/4 length combats and cross country trainers suffice - or will I need walking boots and long trousers?

Also, if you're on Ometepe now, or just back - is the water still high at Playa Santo Domingo?

Many thanks

When I went up I wore light hikers. One guy was wearing hiking sandals. The three things you will encounter on your hike. MUD,MUD and more MUD!!! Dress for it.(got any throwaway clothes?)

Slippery, and be careful, the trails are not marked well. Can be misty and windy at top.

A friend who lives on Ometepe said that the water is still high in Playa Santo Domingo. We decided to stay in Finca Venecia on the other side, I have a few friends who rave about the place.

Hey never7mind,

definity take a jumper or something, as #3 posted it will probably get pretty windy and chilli at the top. I wouldnt do that hike with sandals, normal shoes would be ok but hiking shoes are better.. One more advice: Try to figure out the days before you go on what time in the morning the clouds vanish from the top. We started very early and when we were up it was cloudy and we couldnt see.. when we came down again it was clear. When we were there best time to start the hike would have been between ~ 7:30 - 8:00 i would say.

Enjoy!!

Indeed, as mentioned in #5, if you go to early, you get to the laguna in the crater and you wont see a thing.

I went at the end of April, we left at 07.30 and when we arrived at the crater, the cloud were just moving away, right in time! It was hot the whole hike, no jacket or sweater needed. But yes there was a lot of mud, I washed my sneakers at the lake in playa santo domingo in the afternoon! :-)
