Does anybody have experience bringing a rental car from Costa Rica to Nicaragua? If so, what company did you use? We will be crossing at Penas Blancas. If that is not a good option, I half recall seeing places to rent cars at the Penas Blancas border crossing, but I don't remember which side of the border it was. Has anyone rented at the border? Thanks!

Generally it can't be done and you'll need to arrange to drop at the border and collect at the other side. Beware of sites/phone operators that say its OK (National used to) because when you arrive the agency will laugh and shrug. Basically to enable the car to cross the border you need permission papers issued by the National Registry in advance. This requires someone from the car rental company to attend the Registry on your behalf with copies of your passport (and a myriad of company papers!) to apply and obtain the document. Few will do this (for obvious reasons)and if they do they will charge you considerably for their time and work . Any operator that indicates you can take the car across the border without talking you through this procedure is not telling you the truth....and you won't get across.
