We are heading to CR or Nicaragua next spring with a family group of 10. We would like to rent a home in a more quaint setting with beach and town life at hand. Anyone have any ideas of where I might begin? We are looking at either CR or Nicaragua. Thank you.
There are far more options and variety of beach towns to rent a house at in CR. Most on surf beaches but it all varies. The most popular is Playa Tamarindo, Samara/Nosora areas. Checl VRBO and FlipKey (Trip Advisor)
Also BlueWater Properties in Tamarindo many surf/families use.
There are many factors to consider, do want to have access to national parks? Shopping and nightlife? Busses to other areas? Will you have a rental car? Which airport you flying into? LIR or SJO?
Here is a overview of the many areas in CR to consider for a beach vacation. Please keep in mind San Juan Del Sur offers nothing on the level of ease, nice vibe and easy access to to the beach, as the main beach off SJDS is not swimmable, you need to commute to the nice beaches, and those are better for surfing than swimming.

You also have the caribe side of CR, or Corn Islands Nicaragua, very off the beaten path compared to Pacific beaches.

Need to fly into CI Nica from MGA.
Dominical has a rising funky vibe as of late and the town is right on the shoreline.
I have heard the same of Montezuma and Puerto Viejo as well from friends, and seen pictures that affirm this. However I have never been to those two places.
The beaches in Nica that I have visited have not had that much of a definitive vibe outside of travelers and surfers. Even then, most the beaches I stayed at only had one resort option and no town.
