Ah, SJDN in my post above should very obviously read SJDS - beach development is rather not something San Juan del Norte is known for...

Go to the Corn Islands. Picnic Center on Big Corn is a great place to swim and hang. There's Silver Sands beach on the south side going toward Sally Peachy, you just turn right and go down a dirt road. There's a small bar and guest house and a long beach, narrow but pretty long, with NOTHING on it. Little Corns has a very nice beach on the Casa Iguana side. The very best beach in Nicaragua has absolutely NO developement on it so you can't even get there without hiring a boat for the day. That is the Caribbean beach that runs from the coast outside of Bluefields (not anywhere you want to go) all the way up to Pearl Lagoon. It's a georgous beach and probably in ten years will be the place to go. Right now, you can't even get there.

that's it, you guys sold me. corn islands it is. the 200 round-trip ticket is probably worth it. with the airfare I already paid just to get to managua, what's another hair on an elephant's ass, right? unfortunately, the flights to the corn islands don't run on new year's day, so we'll have a day to kill in Managua. Anything cool to do in and around Managua? Or should I plan to not do anything... since it's a holiday and all?
thanks for all the help.
