So I made the leap and bought tickets to Roatan for the first week in September. Now the question that I pose is what would be a great place to stay? I'd like something close and walkable to town in West End. I'd also like something where the beach and snorkelling is very close. The hard part of this is that I'd I'm working within a budget and I'd like to stay below $60 per night. What would be the best recommendations?

dont do Sea Grape, its out of the way and in an ugly spot, try Arco Iris, Pura Vida, Paradise Inn something in town, anything in west end is not only near snorkling the road is litterally beach. if you pay more than 30 a night its a waste anyway, there are so many options. GO DIVING and go to Tylls, best shop in West end, small, friendly, nice little groups with great divemasters...I spent a year with them they are wonderful!

From looking a little last night I'm leaning toward Posada Las Orquideas or Blenny's Cabins. Does anyone have experience with either or have any other similar recommendations?

Casa Calico is in a quieter area. If you want something more central, Arco Iris is mid-buzz.

We stayed at Half Moon Resort in July. It was 58 dollars a night (for a double) for an air conditioned cabin. Use of snorkels and kayaks was included. The place has a little pier that puts you about 20 meters off the reef. There is a restaurant with a great deck. It was really fantastic. If you go there, ask the guy who handles the snorkels about night snorkeling. They do guided tours. I saw an octopus right off the pier (and many other cool creatures). The staff is very friendly and accomodating. It is on the coral and does not have a beach... but it is a very short walk down to the beach. It is probably a little quieter than some of other hotels as it is at the end of West End.

I am sure there are cheaper places, but we were very impressed. One of the things I really liked was the constant breaze. It was pretty hot all over the island in July. It seemed like the the only time we felt a breaze was on the deck at the restaurant where we sat around drinking beer and watching the fish swim by.
Good luck and have a great trip wherever you end up!

Geofries Tropical Hideaway has cabins from $15 to $25 or a dorm room with 6 beds for $10 with bath and fans. it's set in tropical palms with parrots and not to close to the noise of the bars. i stayed there last week and the owner was very friendly. the restaurant, Rudy's has great local food and smoothies.
if you want an escape from the touristy west end, rent a scooter from Capt. Vans and check out Camp Bay. a great secluded beach with excellent snorkeling and cheap boat trips to the mangrove forest. a small palapa restaurant, La Sirena, over the water has good local seafood and rum punches.
if you plan it out, you can easily make it on $60 a day

Dolphin Hotel, $35, AC, hot water, cable tv, refridgerator and balcony overlooking the bay. Great place to hang out and watch the people.
