Is it possible to go by boat from Utila to Roatan without going back to the mainland? Thanks for any advise or suggestions.

The ferries don't run that way, only back and forth from each to La Ceiba (separate boats and docks). Periodically I hear of someone with a private boat willing to make that run - hopefully someone who has been down there recently has a read a flier or something and can update all of us. Good luck!
There is a sailing boat what you can rent. The price is around 250-300 $. No public transport..

Hi, there is a boat that runs direct from Roatan to Utila, Roger possibly is the captain/boat/companys name? (some random name anyhow sorry my memory fails)
From the Roatan side it's organised through Coconut Tree Divers in West End, so you could try giving them a ring or emailing them. It's $50US so it slightly more expensive than doing the trip via Ceiba, and it takes around 3 or 4 hours whereas back via the mainland would take about 5hrs all in,
