I have a few days to escape and I'm mulling over my options. One of my ideas is Roatan. I'd have five days on the ground excluding travel times. How busy will the area be. What areas should I consider staying? I will be travelling alone, will there be other travellers and activity at that time of the year? What would be the best area for a single twenty something? Should I be worried about hurricanes at all? Thanks

You'll meet plenty of other travellers in West End- Chillies is a good hostel to stay at. September starts into our slow season, but there'll still be people around. Our rainy season doesn't start until october, so september is usually good weather-wise.

If the beach is your thing, West bay is where you want to go. Can be more expensive than West End but in September better chance for deals. West End offers many options too especially if you want to dive. I've lived here three years and have run into trouble with Hurricanes when I fly in or out of Houston and Florida, not on Roatan. My first visit to Roatan I was traveling alone...no worries.

You'll run into plenty of people in either West End or West Bay. My impression from my time there was that it's more of a young backpacker crowd getting dive certificatied in West End and there were more resort looking places and nicer beach in West Bay. I wasn't there in September so can't give you any insight into how busy it will be, but I don't imagine you'll have too much trouble finding people to hang with. I wouldn't really recommend either of the places I stayed at. One note - if you opt for a place with aircon it's worth checking to see if they've got a generator. Power outages didn't seem all that uncommon while I was there and it's a waste of dough to throw down for A/C if there's a fair chance you can't use it..
