Hi,
I'm trying to choose between Esteli or Solentiname.. as for Solentiname I'm more intersted in the Reserve on the south, and I wonder if it's not more accessible if going to the part near the river leading to Los Chiles.
I have about 2 weeks in Nicaragua and want to get to one of the this places
thanks!

Refugio de Vida Silvestre Los Guatuzos. You can access this beautiful park from Los Chiles (Costa Rica) but you have to pass through customs of course which means you go to San Carlos to get your entrance stamp and go on (come back) from there. So if you are in Nicaragua already the boats or tours that go to Solentiname from San Carlos can also be arranged to bring you to Guatazos or better yet both.

You have two very nice reserves near Esteli and they can both be accessed by public bus. Miralfor for sure bus or rental car or find a driver. Meseta Tisay Estanzuela and especially Salto Estanzuelo (waterfall) I walked to from Esteli. Great way to see this mountain countryside, on foot, not a busy road by any means but when you run out of steam a bus might happen or a willing farmer will come by and give you a lift back to town. Hitching seemed pretty common and safe here. Just remember to offer something for gas.

I would say for birding and wildlife if I had to pick take Los Guatuzos although San Carlos is no Esteli.

thank you for your reply.
I will try to make my time in San Carlos as minimum as possible . hope it works with the boats- as it seems it does.
Did you visit the islands of Solentiname. I've read different comments about it, and it seems to me too much time to spend for 3 days- if I'm more into see things then just rest?
