I am considering booking a cheap flight into San Pedro Sula that lands at midnight even though my destination is Roatan. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do at midnight in San Pedro Sula? I imagine I'll need a place to stay for a few hours and then a way to get to Roatan in the morning. I'm travelling on a budget but obviously want to be safe! Any hotel/room recommendations close to the airport? Is it safe to take a taxi at midnight to a hotel? Then in the morning what is the best way to get to Roatan- ferry or flights? Which airlines?

Thanks so much in advance!

We have stayed at Hotel Villa Nuria on the road to the airport- on the road between the airport and San Pedro. Since you don't go into San Pedro, taxi should be less expensive. You can fly either SOSA or Atlantic Air or you can take the bus and ferry.

Last year I researched and decided to try Tamarindo Hostel, then my schedule changed and I didn't have the need. Their site lists airport pickup as a service - don't know if that applies when you're flying in during the night.

I've heard Atlantic Air is out of business - not sure if that's true. Sosa and Isleña should have morning flights to Roatán, though I'd at least attempt to book before you fly in and not just the day ahead. Good luck and keep us posted!

Here's another guesthouse option for an overnight stay in SPS...

Dos Molinos Guesthouse (guesthousedosmolinos@yahoo.com)

I stayed here ~3 wks ago and found this overnight option to be safe and affordable. The accomodations are very basic, but clean and comfortable. The owners, Luis and Blanca, are wonderful people and they will assist you with whatever your travel needs are. They will pick you up at the airport (for a fee) and drive you to the bus station (for free). You can also Google them and find many positive responses from others who have stayed there.

Good luck and have a great trip to Honduras!

Thank you so much for your suggestions! Thank you especially for the email address for Dos Molinos...I have been looking for it everywhere.

Does anyone know how much the flight is from SPS to RTB on Sosa? I found their website- http://aerolineasosa.com. It has a flight schedule, but I cannot find a way to book a flight or figure out how much it costs?
I know the Taca flight costs about $100.

Thanks again

If you're really pinching pennies you could stay in the airport for a few hours and then catch the 5am bus to La Ceiba, thats the port with the ferry to Roatan.

I stayed at Tamarindo Hostel and it was excellent. They arranged a 5am taxi to take me to the airport. The airport is quite a ways from the city center, so I'm not sure what's out there. I think any bus you catch to La Ceiba would originate in the city center or the new bus terminal...both a solid cab ride from the airport...Hedman Alas might has a bus or two that goes from SPS airport to la Ceibe...check their website.

Getting to Roatan....the bus to La Ceiba (3 hours or so) and then the ferry is the cheap way. For flights maybe contact a travel agent in Roatan..they should be able to help with the local airlines.

and regarding "the flight on Taca costs about $100"....not even close....you aren't going anywhere on Taca for $100....a quick search showed $236 + tax on Taca...it's not a cheap airline.
