I'm having a really hard time deciding what place to stay at in Roatan in early June (11th - 14th) and am thinking that maybe I wouldn't need to make reservations ahead of time - and just wing it when I get down there. Does anyone think this would be a bad idea? We are planning to arrive on the morning ferry so we should be getting to West End / West Bay area before noon giving us plenty of time to check out some places.

I'm traveling with a group of 4 adults and we are hoping to all share one room to keep cost down. I've narrowed it down to Casa Calico, Posada Arco Iris, Posada Las Orquideas or Casa Del Sol in West End. All of these places have rooms in the $60-$80 / night price range including taxes. I'm also considering Bananarama or West Bay Lodge but those are little higher in price than I'd like. Is it likely that there would still be rooms available for 4 people at these hotels in June? Also, do places offer discounts if you book in person / pay in cash?

Thanks a million!

Yes, there will be rooms. Not a good idea to book ahead expecially off season. You can always get a better deal in person, heck the place might even be empty.

Greggo - thanks for your reply. I guess it will mean a little more work when we get down there but it will certainly be nice to have the chance to check out a place in person before having to shell out the money ahead of time and committ ourselves to staying somewhere sight unseen.

Does anyone know if any of the hotels I am interested in are typically filled up during June? Or is the entire island pretty quiet that time of year?

I don't think you'll need reservations in June. There are plenty of places to stay. I wouldn't suggest staying at Posada Arco Iris; it's right on the main drag, very noisy, and the restaurant there specializes in overpriced and terrible food. We really liked Lands End Resort, but they don't have the option of four adults sharing a room. Have fun! If you get a chance, go out on the big catamaran for a sunset cruise.

I disagree with the above poster, Arco Iris was the nicest spot in West End. It is the only beach with lounge chairs, and free kayaks were available. It was 20 meters from Sundowners, and was in the quiet section of town. THe restaurant was more expensive than most, I only ate there once, but it was good.We usually walked right by on our way to somewhere else. Dont stay in West Bay, take the water taxi. I never reserve ahead, but this time I did and was very happy. I arrived a night early and there were no rooms, stayed at Chiles next door which was ok but no comparison to the rooms at the Arco. Call them and see if they will give you a deal. Usually I say don't reserve but there wernt a lot of spots to stay here

I have seen quite a few other people that were happy with Posada Arco Iris, so it's really just a matter of opinion. I have been amazed, however, at the rave reviews the restaurant there gets. Our dinner for two, with three drinks, was $85. My "famous" chicken dinner consisted of a previously frozen chicken breast with Campbells mushroom soup over it, a pile of veggies that had clearly been poured out of a mixed vegetables frozen bag (Green Giant anyone?), and a lump of bland, mayonnaisey potato salad. My husband's dinner was almost an exact replica, despite him ordering a completely different chicken dish. The service was TERRIBLE. Despite there being about 9 people working and only three groups eating, they couldn't be bothered to come by and check on us once. Smoking and chit-chatting was way more important, clearly.

That was just my experience. Maybe we went on a really off night, I dunno. But I had many dinners on the island (Noodle House, the Cajun chicken place) that were affordable and ten times as delicious.

Staying at the hotel itself could be a lovely experience, but it seemed like a little noisier than I would want (being on the main drag and all). Let us know what you decided on, and how your trip went. I wish I could go back to Roatan tomorrow :)

I've never stayed at Arco Iris but it looks like it would be really noisy at night.

Las Orquideas has very nice rooms that contain a double and two singles. However, on our recent trip, a friend had some issues with them over the bill and it was handled very poorly by the manager. She was rude and threatened to make the staff pay for the error if my friend didn't pay up. I won't be staying there again for that reason.

I've eaten breakfast at Casa Calico. It seems like a pleasant place and I plan to stay there on my next trip.

That's a shame to hear about the manager at Las Orquideas... that's no way to treat your guests or your employees!

I actually decided to go ahead and stay over at the Blenny House just down the road from Las Orquideas - I was able to get it for $120/night including AC and tax. It was a little bit of a splurge compared to the other places I was looking at but the pictures looked so nice I couldn't pass it up!

When you stay at the Blenny house, make sure to wander over to Land's End (right down the road, I think) to watch the sunset at the bar. It's beautiful.
