Hello All. Apologize for asking such a seemingly simple question, and a thousand thank yous to everyone who takes the time to answer questions. Please know that I've clicked nearly all through the thread and can't find the answer to this one: how far in advance does one need to make reservations in Honduras? My husband and I will be arriving in SAP on Feb 14, and have 11 glorious days before we head back to frozen Alaska. We plan to hit Copan and Gracias and chill there for a few days. Then make our way to the beach. But when we travel, we like to keep things loose. How loose can we be? We're mid-range travelers and have budgeted about $60 a night for the first part of our trip, and about $70 or so for Roatan (depending on if we want to get certified). I just don't know yet how long we will stay at any given place. We love little villages, so if there's on we find we can't resist, we might just cut the beach time. Can we just show up and expect to get a decent room? Once again, thanks.

Yes, I believe you can. I often reserve in advance because I don't want to go from place to place looking or because I fall in love with a specific place that tends to fill up and don't want to miss out on it the next trip. If you're willing to settle for less than your first choice and to look around a bit you'll be fine.

Reservations are not necessary and take away spontaneity. In fact I only pay 1 night at a time even if I think I might stay a few days in case I get a whim to move on which does happen.

You will likely get a better deal as a walk up. Some places only take walk ups. Some places don't even advertise. No fears. Copan has tons of places, many much less than you are willing to pay. Same with Roatan.

When i first went to Ecuador and Peru , i was worry about no place to sleep at night too.
But after some traveling, there always seems to be more hostel , hotel than there are traveler. A few places i went to as soon as i got off the bus . There were hotel staff trying to get me to go to their hotel. Now i just make sure i arrive at a place early in the day then just walk around near town square and find a place i like within my budget. Usually about $8 per night in Ecuador and Peru.
I will be heading to Honduras also but will arrive a little before you, 10 Feb. Maybe we will run into one another.

Good luck

Been to Central America 6 times(But not Honduras(yet).) Have only made one reservation.(Late night arrival in San Jose). Have never had a problem. Like to have the freedom to change locations on a whim. Have a great trip and tell us about it.

Unless it's Christmas or Semana Santa there is no need for reservations. Some places you wouldn't even need them then.

If you're budgeting $60 a day for the two, you'll be Living Large and still be challenged to spend that much unless going for deluxe accommodations. Stayed in a very nice Copán hotel for US$8 a night for a single; splurged in Gracias and stayed at the hillside Guancascos for US$13 a night, but there were even liveable options in town for $5. Have a fantastic trip!

I agree with #8. I was just there and it seems the "going rate" was $10 for a private room for two ppl with hot water/cable tv and aircon.

I know very little about the main land but the above people seem to.

I can tell you Roatan is going to be far more expensive and if your going to end up on the island around Easter you had better make reservations now. If you are not so concerned about where you stay.... I would bet you can find something at any other time.

I much prefer to play is loose but when going to Roatan I make reservations before going. I did not in Ireland, Asia or will I be doing so in the Middle East this year. Sadly, Roatan is fast become a hot spot for all-inclusive huge resort nuttiness.
