I'm looking to take a quick trip to the Bay Islands to get SCUBA certified, as its something I've been meaning to do for awhile. The Bay Islands seem like one of the most reasonably priced places that doesn't involve a large time change, which really stings on a short trip. I'm considering going to Utila since it is supposedly a touch cheaper than Roatan, both for diving and lodging/eating/etc, and I'm told its more of a 'backpacker lifestyle' than Roatan.
My main goals for the trip are for it to be compact, time frame wise, and inexpensive. This is my first time traveling solo, as well as first 'backpacking' style low budget experience, so I'm looking for any general advice people can give me about Honduras/Utila, or backpack traveling in general. If it matters, I am 25 and male.
I'm going to be on a fairly short timetable. The 19th is the earliest I can leave, and plan on coming back on the 24th, leaving me 4 full days. I can come back on the 25th at the latest, but I would rather save that extra day for an emergency if something goes other than planned. Right now I'm planning on flying into San Pedro Sula (SAP) with an arrival on the 19th around noon. I don't believe any of the airlines run flights to Utila on Tuesdays, so I'll likely be trying to find a bus, which I may have done anyways to save money, and get into La Ceiba sometime in the afternoon. More than likely too late to get the 4pm ferry to Utila.
Is there any realistic way I could make it to the Island on the 19th without staying overnight in La Ceiba? My arrival options for getting to Honduras can be flexible, basically any flight operated by a US airline will work fine, both for getting in, and for leaving. I don't see any flights that can get me in a position to catch a 4pm ferry to the island.
For getting from SAP to La Ceiba I'm looking at the bus from www.hedmanalas.com. I don't see any prices on their website. Any ideas what it costs? Is it fairly reliable? Any alternate suggestions? do I need reservations, or just show up?
So...overnight on the 19th in La Ceiba, and take the morning ferry to Utila, hopefully to start the certification course that day. I know nothing about diving, from the looks of it the PADI Open Water certification is what I am looking for? I've looked that the Utila Dive Centre's website and it says the course is doable in 3.5 to 4.5 days, so it just may fit in my schedule. $289 for the certification including lodging seems pretty reasonable. The morning ferry would get me in around 10:30am.
Is it realistic to start the course sometime after 10:30 on the 20th, all day 21st/22nd, then finish on the 23rd in time to make a 2:00pm ferry back to La Ceiba, spend the night in La Ceiba, then take a 5:15am bus on the 24th to SAP for a noontime flight? Are the dive shops that flexible with things?
Right now I'm looking at Utila Diving Centre, since it seems like one of the larger shops, and since I am going alone I wouldn't mind being with other people. It says lodging is included, is that a decent option for a solo traveler?
Couple random questions...
For those that travel backpack style, especially in shared dorm type lodging, what do you do with your stuff during the day? Are there lockers? I don't imagine you can just leave your stuff laying around?
Can you drink at night while doing SCUBA during the day? I can't see why not, but i read somewhere supposedly your not supposed to? I can't see the harm in a few drinks at night, but who knows.
Any suggestions for bringing money? Carry Credit cards/ATM cards? Travelers checks? Or just stash some USDs away and convert them to local once I get there (if so, where?, because the Airports often seem like a ripoff)
Traveling solo for the first time is a little bit intimidating, but most people I've talked to who have done it have always had positive experiences. I often have periods of 8-10 days off, and I would like to travel the world a bit more by taking quick week long trips, but in order to do that I'm going to have to master the art of cheap travel, which I'm not used to.
Any insights or tips would be hugely appreciated. Always a scramble trying to plan a last minute trip, but hopefully it will be worth it.
