Traveling to La Ceiba , then Roatan in early January 2011. We would like to go on a trip into La Mosquita. Is there any companies that are reliable. Can't seem to find anything for budget travelers. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
i know some Mesquito Indians that make the trip from Roatan to La Ceiba then to Cauquita. i will try to get you the name of the cargo boat they pay passage on.

Well, when I visited La Mosquitia back in 2009, I used La Ruta Moskitia.
Honestly, as far as I know, the only reliable ones are:
-La Ruta Moskitia
-La Moskitia Ecoaventuras
Jungle River Lodge also offers visits to La Moskitia, and there are also probably another few.
However, I wholeheartedly recommend La Ruta Moskitia. I know that it technically isn't budget, but if you can join an already existing group, the prices for you individually will drop significantly.
La Mosquitia is something you simply can't get it the other Central American countries (though Nicaragua may soon offer reliable expeditions there after the next few years). You have of course the natural beauty -- very untouched, raw, and far from civilization, and so many different types of ecosystems. Then you have the cultural groups, such as the Miskito and Pech. With La Ruta Moskitia, I got to go crocodile spotting at night, experience Miskito dances, some Garifuna culture, and a lot more as well (I joined an existing group).
La Moskitia is the most adventurous side of Central America (and Darien as well). There is 2 ways getting to La Moskitia.
1) From Tocoa catch a 4x4 shared taxi to Iriona (to Palacios in the dry season) and from there by boat to Brus Laguna. On Rio Platano you have to organize a private boat for at least 350 US$. If you want to see the wildest part, twice a day a boat leaves to Ahuas, where you can get cargo boats to Wampusirpi and Krausirpi.
2) From Tegus catch an 8am bus to Palestina Patuca and hitch-hike in the port (from February to April it's a hard job). In 2 days you'll get to Tawahka Asangni. Take at least 30 gallons of gasoline with you. A private boat to Wampusirpi is 600 US$.
La Ruta Moskitia, Ecoaventuras or Mirador Adventures organize trips to the zone!
