A friend and I are planning a trip to La Moskitia in late July/early August and want to visit La Moskitia, particulalry for hiking and wildlife spotting. I've heard some great things about the various companies that run tours there (La Ruta Moskitia etc) but I want to know if there is another way of seeing the same great things but self-planned. Can you hire guides easily when you're out there or is it advisable to have it planned through a company before arriving? What have people done there before? We don't mind roughing it!

On 2/27/08 I posted our trip report that we made last year- I can highly recommend La Moskitia Ecoadventuras out of La Ceiba or La Ruta Moskitia for tours or just assistance in planning your trip. I really recommend that you go in by bus and truck and fly out-the experience of traveling back in time is incredible- (however, I would only do it one way) You can do your own trip and hire guides as you go. However, some assistance in putting it together is certainly helpful. If you are going to fly, make sure you make reservations ahead of time. July and August are at the beginning of the rainy season so you will need to keep a handle on the weather.

Google Norma Love. She lives there full time but she is not a tour company.

I travelled from Honduras to Bluefields through Moskitia, with short stops, and you can of course travel by yourself, but this will mean waiting for some transport for many hours or days, or chartering boats. Moskitia is not a tourist destination, therefore arranging a tour won't mean that you'll be travelling with dozens of gringos/Europeans taking picture to everything or that kids and youngs will be waiting for you to sell their stuff. Here it simply means to ease some arrangements for the extra bucks. And it might be worth.
