Hello everybody, I am a solo traveller who is planning a trip to central and south america. What i really want to do is go to the moskitia region in honduras and carribean coast of nicaragua, but from what i see this is very expensive indeed. Everywhere is suggesting on going on an organised trip, but this is going to cost at least £500 just for a week!

So i was thinking that it might be better to travel into the region through public transport or getting a few lifts off the locals, and hike around he region by myself. Of course, this may not be possible in areas where the paths arnt clearly marked. So then i was hoping i could just get a well informed local to take me into the jungle and highlands for a small fee and also have a homestay for a small fee as well. Can this be done? or do you have to go on an organised tour and lose a great load of cash?

Thanks

It can be done more cheaply by doing it independently, however its still more expensive than other areas in Honduras because of the transportation required to get there. Also if you do it independently you need to have more time available as there is potential waiting time for boats, and some basic spanish is required also. I spent just under $US 400 in 2009 for a two week trip into the area, this included some guided hikes from Las Marias (the locals act as guides in that town) and turtle spotting from the village of Plaplaya.

I've posted some instrucitons on getting there / costs in previous posts :

Its an amazing region well worth the effort.
