Hello,

I’m planning a six week journey through Central America February/March 2012, flying in and out of Guatemala City. I want to visit Guatemala, Honduras and maybe El Salvador.

I’m now thinking about spending about three weeks time in Honduras. I’ve been studying my guide book and I’ve seen a lot of things I like to do in the western and northern part of the country (Lenca trail, a few National Parks, Lago de Yojoa, diving course Utila). Next to that I also like to add in a (two or three day) jungle trek. La Moskitia would probably be the best place for that, but it’s maybe a bit out of route. Is there any possibility for a two or three day jungle trek in the western or northern part of Honduras, or is La Moskitia the only (real) possibility?

Thanks...

Honduras has pretty extensive forest cover even beyond La Moskitia. Near La Ceiba, there's Pico Bonito National Park as well as Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge (mangroves and forest). But a trek I highly recommend is Cusuco National Park with JungleXpeditions.

Near Gracias, Celaque is impressive but not as well accessible in terms of wildlife. Lake Yojoa is a natural mecca, or at least it was to me: fantastic birding on the lake flanked by two rainforest-cloud forest national parks.

Thanks for you reply Rultikart! I checked the website of the company you mentioned and it looks great. The location would fit perfectly in my current ‘itinerary thoughts’. Was it easy to arrange the trek on the spot? I’m hoping to join a group when I’m there. What was your experience?

I scheduled my trip with them no less than a day before, but they might accomodate to you if it's short notice. I'd email them to be sure.

I elaborated on my experience with them here:

I also made trip reports on Tegucigalpa, Comayagua, Lake Yojoa, The Lenca Trail, Copan Valley, Tela and Omoa, La Ceiba, and Trujillo. Just search for "Honduras Trip Report -- name of place here" and you'll get some results.
